Baby dies after head-on crash while sitting on driver’s lap
A baby has died following a horrific crash in Sydney’s south-west on Monday.
The 11-month-old boy was sitting on his father’s lap in the driver’s seat when they crashed head-on with another vehicle on Clingan Avenue at Lurnea.
The airbag deployed, inflicting critical head and facial injuries.
A neighbour on the quiet residential street heard the crash and found the 31-year-old father holding his infant son and crying for his wife.
The baby boy was airlifted to Westmead Children’s Hospital but died late last night.
Neither of the drivers were hurt, but have undergone mandatory testing.
Chief Inspector Bob Tunks has told Macquarie National News it looked as though the baby was sitting behind the wheel.
“It would appear to be the case that the child was unrestrained, sitting on the father’s lap.”
The crash investigation unit is continuing its inquiries with the possibility of criminal charges likely.
