The World War II veteran who inspired the nation by walking almost 100km to raise funds for veteran support is being remembered as an Aussie legend.

Sergeant Bert Le-Merton passed away on Monday night aged 103, and has been honoured by high profile Australians including the Prime Minister.

Soldier On CEO Ivan Slavich told Jim Wilson Bert encapsulated everything great about his generation.

“There were a lot of tears here at Soldier On for Bert and his whole family.

“One of the sayings I loved, one day he talked about ‘gizundas’ and we had no idea what he was talking about.

“The term ‘gizundas’ [means] goes under the underwear!”
