A teenage boy is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after being stabbed in a random attack in Sydney’s inner west.

The 16-year-old and his 14-year-old brother exited the Woolworths on Darling Street at Balmain just before 7pm and were allegedly confronted by a man armed with a knife.

After a short verbal exchange, the boy was stabbed in the stomach and hand, while the men fled the area with a woman.

Witnesses say the child was screaming for help, saying, “I’ve been stabbed!”.

Paramedics treated him at the scene then rushed him to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

The victim’s family has contacted 2GB’s Ben Fordham as the boy undergoes multiple surgeries.

“The stomach operation was last night. The knife hit his liver and arteries.

“The hand doctors have been and the knife went right through his hand.

“He has cut tendons and broken bones. Hand operation might be today. He’s stable for now”

Police are now hunting the couple.

The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm to 185cm tall, in his mid to late 20s, with a medium build, fair complexion, ginger hair and who spoke with an Australian accent.

He was last seen wearing a red jacket with no hood and dark coloured pants.

There is no description of the woman at this time.
