‘Bring that ship to life’: First American warship named after Australian city
Commodore of Littoral Combat Ships, Captain Mark Crawford has discussed the new warship, USS Canberra.
It is one of the first American naval ships to be named after a city outside the United States.
Captain Crawford emphasised the significance of the warship being named after the Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Canberra.
“It is extremely rare considering this is only the second ship to be named [after an overseas city], with the first one being Canberra as well”, he said.
“This is obviously in honour of that continuing alliance and the strength of that alliance”, Deborah Knight said in response.
This marks the first time a US ship is being ceremoniously commissioned overseas, in a “joint US Navy and Royal Australian Navy commissioning ceremony”.
