Australian actor Bryan Brown has described his latest series as an “elderly road movie”.

The new, eight-episode Australian romantic mystery series Darby and Joan premieres today on Acorn TV.

Darby and Joan tells the story of a retired Australian policeman with a dog as his only company and a widowed English nurse who meet each other and embark together on an epic odyssey in the outback of northern Australia.

Darby and Joan shines a light on isolated, fascinating and often unseen areas of regional Australia, and a myriad of fascinating characters moving through a world where everyone seems to be searching for something.

Bryan Brown told Deborah Knight the story of being on the road is not actually lonely and viewers should be inspired.

“You come across things, you’re actually looking at how beautiful the world is or meeting some character!”
