Coalition minister says Australia won’t budge on foreign aid budget
Aid organisations have slammed the Federal Government for refusing requests to pump up the foreign aid budget.
At an event in the UK, Minister for International Development Concetta Fierravanti-Wells said recent polls show 80% of Australians oppose increasing the foreign aid budget.
Senator Fierravanti-Wells declared Australia’s aid budget will be fixed $4 billion for the next two years until the economy is back on “sustainable footing”.
Chief Advocate for World Vision Australia Tim Costello has lashed out at the claims, saying Australia needs to fulfil its foreign aid responsibilities in the Pacific without relying on the UK.
“It’s a bit rich for our aid minister to say we’ve cut our aid… you pick up the bill and the tab for us,” he tells Chris Kenny.
