Starting today, codeine products can no longer be purchased over the counter.

Customers will now have to get a prescription from their doctor for medications that contain any amount of the drug.

The move is in line with the US and UK with the Federal Government believing it will save up to 100 lives a year.

Australian Medical Association Vice President Doctor Tony Bartone tells Alan Jones the drug has been misused for too long.

“The studies show there are significant thousands of Australians who are using it inappropriately and they’re putting themselves at risk, putting their organs at risk and putting their own health at long-term damage.

“It’s about reducing the level of codeine in the community.

“In the leadup to today, there’s been enormous information, education to assist all health professionals in the switchover period.”
