Christmas was only three days ago, but Coles is already rolling out hot cross buns.

The buns are traditionally sold around Easter time but they’re already being sold at some Australian supermarkets.

Images of the baked goods on display at Coles began circulating on social media on Thursday, with some shoppers criticising the move.

Others have welcomed the early addition, saying they should be available all year round.

Coles spokesperson Martine Alpins tells Michael McLaren the buns are extremely popular and some shoppers expect them to be available straight after Christmas.

“We have customers who come in expecting them on Boxing Day,” she says.

The Easter treat will also be getting a size upgrade, with the jumbo hot cross bun hitting stores from Saturday.
