Concern grows as foot and mouth disease could cause rural devastation
Aussies are being warned of an ongoing concern in Bali which could have dire consequences on our own shores.
The livestock disease could devastate Australia’s livestock industry and rural communities and could even cost the economy up to $80 billion.
Foot and mouth disease spreads among livestock either airborne or through contaminated feed and clothing and some farming groups are calling on the federal government to suspend travel between Bali and Australia.
This afternoon, agricultural ministers from across the country will meet to discuss the growing threat due to the huge amount of tourist traffic going to and from Bali.
Veterinary Professor and Animal Diseases expert Dr Mark Schembri told Ben Fordham the quarantine level and rules for those infected needs to be spot on.
“Everyone that comes from foot and mouth disease countries … they are not to come to farms in Australia, there needs to be a period where those people stay of our agricultural land.”
