A Senate candidate is defending using photographs and videos of herself in Naval uniform in her election campaign material.

Australian Conservatives candidate Sophie York is a Lieutenant Commander in the naval reserve and comes from a military family.

But the Defence Force has rules against its imagery being used in election campaigns, and has ordered the Lieutenant Commander to remove a video which featured her in uniform with her father.

The rules are in place so the ADF can remain apolitical.

But Ms York tells Alan Jones they are only being applied to certain parties, with Labor and Liberal candidates previously being allowed to campaign in uniform.

“My CO [commanding officer] is probably a decent person but the controllers behind this instruction are what bothers me.

“I’ve noticed the ADF want to be perceived as apolitical but they are being selective.”
