Cricket grapples with ‘long-term’ threat
Cricket Australia is concerned about a lack of new enrolments among first-time cricketers.
Its annual cricket census for 2021-22 has revealed a 10 per cent drop in participants in the organisation’s Blast program.
Australian Sports Foundation CEO Patrick Walker told Deborah Knight while there are some areas where participation is on the rise, the biggest concern lies with the 4-10 age group.
“If you don’t pick up the skills of cricket at that age you’re most unlikey to pick up the sport in later years – it’s probably a long-term concern for that sport.”
