Crisis looming as health and aged care staff reject vaccination, union warns
NSW is being warned of a health system in crisis, as workers risk losing their jobs over opposition to the vaccine while the state hits its peak of infections.
One in six NSW Health workers are unvaccinated, despite the looming 30 September deadline to get their first jab.
Meanwhile, employees of the aged care sector are due to be fully vaccinated from tomorrow, but six per cent were unvaccinated at last count.
Health Services Union secretary Gerard Hayes called for a two-week extension to the aged care deadline, telling Clinton Maynard more time to educate the vaccine hesitant in both sectors is needed.
“[If] they are out of the workforce … that means we’ve got escalating infection in a decreasing workforce: that’s my big worry here.
“It would be easy to be black and white, and just say ‘do it, or else’.
“We can’t afford the ‘or else’.”
