Widespread voter fraud could be costing MPs their seats due to hundreds of thousands of inconsistencies on the electoral roll.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) failed to communicate incorrect voter information to the Australian Electoral Commission after the same-sex marriage plebiscite.

248,000 envelopes sent to Australian homes listed on the electoral roll were marked ‘return to sender – not known at this address’.

But the ABS did not pass this information on to the Electoral Commission to investigate if the entries were false or incorrect.

Lex Stewart tells Alan Jones it’s “a disgrace”.

“We’ve been arguing for years that it needs amending because at the moment you have no voter ID.

“Anyone can walk into any polling booth and say ‘I’m Alan Jones’.”

Last year a Federal Parliamentary Committee recommended an electronic electoral roll be established so voters could not vote at multiple locations.

But the government has failed to implement any of the recommendations.

Lex says he’s written to many Coalition MPs about the issue but no one has done anything.

“It’s just a mystery why they’d be so sluggish to do what’s common sense.

“We do not have a democracy, we have a democracy in crisis.”
