Diabetics have been left unable to access medication as people hoping to lose some kilos buy up the vital drug.

A number of listeners have contacted Ben Fordham Live with concerns they can’t get their hands on medication for their diabetes.

Ozempic has been approved as a weight loss drug for people with type 2 diabetes.

But prescriptions are being issued to non-diabetics by online GPs, with a sudden spike in demand leading to the shortage.

Pharmacy Guild of Australia President Trent Twomey told Ben Fordham while the practice may be immoral, it’s not illegal.

“There’s been these entrepreneurial GPs that are popping up these apps that are issuing a script without them ever seeing a patient.”

2GB advertiser Pilot Founder Tim Doyle has rejected claims their website is used to access the medication.

“You can’t access Ozempic.

“We use Saxenda, which is an alternative, not actually available for diabetes. It’s specific to weight loss.”
