The Ray Hadley Morning Show has received tip-offs people are rorting disaster relief payments meant for the victims of bushfires.

Listeners in Port Macquarie say many have been boasting about receiving the $1000 payment with made-up excuses such as their curtains smelling of smoke.

To receive the payment people simply have to prove they live in an area that has been affected by the bushfires.

Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud says they will go after those who abuse the payments.

“We have, in fact, caught people who have done the wrong thing, actually claimed this money that they’re not entitled to, and we’ve actually charged them.

“At the moment we’re just focused on getting money out the door to these people that have got nothing.”
