Disillusioned pet owners send puppies to the pound after ‘insane’ COVID surge
New pet owners who have bought a fluffy companion amid the pandemic are being warned of ongoing behavioural issues.
Bondi vet Dr Kate Adams told Joe Hildebrand she hopes the surge in pet sales and adoptions will decline as restrictions ease.
“I don’t even know if we can actually keep up with this level of pet purchases.
“At Bondi vet I think we’re running something like 10 to 12 puppy classes a week. It is absolutely insane.”
A lot of people who brought home animals in early 2020 as the virus broke out didn’t do a lot of research, she said.
“Now those pets are turning one, and … they become problematic – they might not be toilet trained, they become problem barkers.
“All of those types of issues … lead to pets being surrendered, so I’m already starting to see that now and we haven’t got out of lockdown yet.”
