Dr Google: Patients should be using the internet to check symptoms

The Australian Medical Association says doctors should not be annoyed at patients who google their symptoms before an appointment.

Mark Levy speaks with the president of the AMA, Doctor Michael Gannon.

“What’s difficult for patients is to work out what’s a credible source of information and what’s not.”

Mark asked Dr Gannon if he uses the internet for his own for research and to understand various conditions.

“Look, I use Wikipedia frequently when I’m looking up rare genetic syndromes.”

“Doctors really get grumpy when someone walks in and says they’ve done their own research… and decided they were an expert.

“[Doctors] should embrace the fact that people are trying to become more literate about their health.”
