The NSW Education Minister has rejected following the lead of the Opposition to ban mobile phones in all public schools.

The current ban covers primary schools.

Opposition leader Chris Minns says extending the ban to high schools would improve results and keep teenagers safer online.

Sarah Mitchell told Deborah Knight many schools have enacted their own ban already.

“More than 70 per cent of schools already have full restrictions in place.”

But the Minister thinks a disparity in the technology available to students needs to be considered in order to not disadvantage any students.

“If the only device a student has is their phone to look something up then that’s the balance we have to strike.”
