Eight children have had “lifesaving” surgery postponed over two-day period

Sick kids continue to have their surgeries postponed as Sydney Children’s Hospital administrators admit there is no immediate solution.

Frustrated families have told 2GB’s Ray Hadley scheduled surgeries have been postponed up to six times because there aren’t enough post-operative beds.

Ray has also received a leaked letter from Senior Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) staff addressed to Sydney Children’s Hospital Network Chief Executive, Doctor Michael Brydon last week.

The letter details issues including cancelled surgeries and a failure to provide appropriate care to patients.

HeartKids CEO Mark Brooke says these cancelled surgeries have “devastating consequences” for sick children and their families.

“One of the great frustrations for all families has been the cancellation of services.”

“We’ve spoken to eight families in the last two days who have had their surgeries cancelled three or more times. Of those eight, five of them live outside of the Sydney metropolitan area.”

Dr Brydon says the hospital has been under significant pressure but they try to provide the “best care possible”.
