An emergency National Cabinet meeting has been called for this week to discuss a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The next meeting was not scheduled to take place until February next year.

An additional 3800 new cases have been recorded across New South Wales and Victoria.

The increase comes as a number of states and territories around the country reopen for the holidays.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the state and territory leaders will meet to ensure appropriate health measures are in place.

Nine News reporter Johnathan Kearsley told Chris O’Keefe he suspects booster shots will be on the agenda.

“Where are the vaccines, can they get them into people’s arms quicker, and could potentially the timeframe be shortened?

“That would open up the booster rollout again to even more people, but would it put a strain on the supply that’s there?”
