Energy market operator warns a change to power supply needed to avoid blackouts

Article image for Energy market operator warns a change to power supply needed to avoid blackouts

The Australian Energy Market Operator CEO says there needs to be a change to the power grid in order to avoid blackouts in the summertime.

NSW and Victoria risk being without power this year during the extreme heat due to aging coal and gas generators, according to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).

777,000 NSW homes could experience blackouts once the Liddell power plant closes in 2023.

AEMO CEO Audrey Zilberman tells Ross Greenwood there needs to be a change to our power grid.

“The situation is getting tight.

“We really think that the standard around what kind of resources we need to have in the system, in order to make sure that we don’t get into these emergencies, need to be changed.”

Origin Energy CEO Frank Calabria tells Ross Greenwood there aren’t enough replacements for ageing coal plants.

“It’s not a challenge about bringing more renewable power into the system… it is actually the replacement of ageing plants coming out of the system.”
