‘Enough is enough’ – Jacinta Price wants focus on ‘real’ indigenous issues
Two of Australia’s most prominent indigenous leaders are speaking out about some of the biggest issues facing our first Australians.
Warren Mundine and Jacinta Price are advocating for solutions to alcoholism, domestic violence, sexual assault and raging drug use in indigenous communities.
Ben Fordham speaks with Ms Price, an Alice Springs councillor, who says more focus needs to be placed on real issues.
“It’s really challenging at times to get people to focus on the issues that are actually really important to us.”
She tells Ben something needs to be done about rising numbers of sexual assault in these communities.
This comes after the alleged sexual assault of a two-year-old by a 24-year-old man in the Northern Territory.
“We have to focus on the fact that alarming statistics around indigenous children and the higher rates of STIs can only mean one thing – there is alarming rates of sexual abuse going on.
“What’s saddening is that the fact that it took the really horrible crime like the alleged rape of a two-year-old for people to take notice of what is actually going on.
“Enough is enough.”
