Acquitted nightclub rapist Luke Lazarus has broken his silence, going head to head in a confronting interview with 2GB’s Ben Fordham.
In 2013, Lazarus was accused of raping 18-year-old Saxon Mullins in an alleyway behind his father’s Kings Cross nightclub.
He was found guilty and sentenced to three years behind bars but has since been acquitted on appeal in a judge-alone trial.
Judge Robyn Tupman accepted that Ms Mullins didn’t consent to sex, but ruled Lazarus had reason to believe otherwise.
A Four Corners interview with Ms Mullins has sparked public outrage at the decision and even resulted in the NSW Attorney-General ordering a review of the state’s consent laws.
Now, for the first time, Luke Lazarus tells his side of the story in an exclusive interview.
“I always intended on staying silent on this.
“However, after Four Corners purposely did not represent the facts the way that the judge found them, I felt that I had to come on and give my side of the story.”
Ben Fordham agreed to the interview in order to challenge Mr Lazarus on behalf of Ms Mullins and the public.
“My impression of you, from a distance, is that you are a rich kid, you’re spoilt, you’re powerful, you’re someone who took advantage of a young 18-year-old girl who was drunk, who was a virgin, who didn’t want to lose her virginity her by having anal sex with a stranger in an alleyway,” Ben says.
“I get the impression, Luke Lazarus, that you pushed this on her, you knew you were doing the wrong thing, and while you may have been acquitted by the courts, the court of public opinion views you as scum.”
