EXCLUSIVE | Prisoner stabbed seven times, family not notified
An inmate has been stabbed up to seven times at the dysfunctional Parklea Correctional Centre, with the jail choosing not to notify his family.
Ray Hadley received a tip-off that the man was attacked on March 20.
He was taken to Westmead Hospital, undergoing surgery on his wounds before being returned to jail.
What’s worse though is the prison’s decision not to notify the man’s family of the attack.
Disgraced operator GEO Group has a shocking record when it comes to running the prison.
A statement from Corrective Services NSW says the prisoner’s family wasn’t notified because the injuries weren’t life-threatening.
Full statement
“GEO has advised on 20 March about 2.40pm, Parklea Correctional Centre staff identified that a male inmate had been injured, reportedly stabbed.
The inmate was taken to the prison clinic for treatment prior to his transfer to hospital via NSW Ambulance, escorted by an armed and secure vehicle.
He underwent minor surgery on 21 March and was returned to the prison later that day. Two shivs suspected of being used in the attack were found by staff.
The alleged assailant was placed in segregated custody and NSW Police contacted. Police investigations are continuing.
The inmate received moderate injuries – none of which were identified as being life threatening. It is the policy of Parklea Correctional Centre not to advise the next of kin in such circumstances.”
