Expert rubbishes plan to introduce up to six household bins

Australians could soon be forced to separate their recycling into six different bins if a new proposal gets the go-ahead.

Victorians will be asked to separate their waste into six categories (paper, glass, organics, plastic, metal, and other rubbish) if Infrastructure Victoria’s proposal is accepted.

The country has been looking at how to prevent contamination in recycling after China made the decision to stop importing waste from Australia.

But CEO of the Waste Management Association of Australia Gayle Sloan tells Ben Fordham the idea doesn’t make any sense.

“There are better ways to solving these issues than more bins in the household.”

She says the solution lies in redesigning packaging so materials can be more easily separated.

“We need to design differently and design that waste out.”
