Family bakery’s battle against closure ignites public outcry
After 41 years serving the community, the iconic Bakers Oven, a family-run bakery in Sydney’s The Rocks, is struggling to stay afloat amid rising rent and bureaucracy.
The bakery survived the COVID-19 pandemic when many businesses in the area shut down and was even the poster child for the NSW Government’s Dine and Discover pandemic voucher scheme. However, now the government and its various departments have made it challenging for the family to renew their lease.
A Current Affair’s feature on the bakery’s plight has led to an outpouring of support, with many urging the government to step in and protect these local institutions.
Steve Marshall, the reporter from A Current Affair said, “The Rocks is about celebrating history right? Looking back on the historic nature of the place, why wouldn’t you celebrate a business that has been there for 41 years?”
