Federal government ignoring Toll Group’s national road safety plan

A senior trucking executive has not received a response from the federal government to his plan to reduce the nation’s road toll.

Toll Group Managing Director Michael Byrne sent an open letter to a number of organisations in January, calling on them to urgently address six critical areas – including a genuinely national approach to heavy vehicle regulation.

Mr Byrne tells Ray Hadley a key piece of road safety compliance technology is still being blocked due to a number of small groups “protecting their own interests”.

“Electronic work diaries have been debated for eight years and we still don’t have a decision.

“The government and the industry have been stuffing around with this for the best part of a decade.

“I have to look after my 19,000 people in this country so I need to keep banging on about it.”

Mr Bryne tells Ray he’s written to state and federal governments about the road toll crisis and has heard crickets.

“The only people I’ve heard back from… is the NSW police and the NSW government.”
