Fines for surfers without leg ropes: Byron shire council takes action
Byron Shire Council makes waves with its decision to fine surfers who don’t use leg ropes for safety.
The council voted unanimously to implement fines for surfers not using leg ropes, as these can become airborne and cause injuries.
Councillor Cate Coorey, who proposed the motion, shared that while the exact fine amount is yet to be determined, it would likely be similar to the fine for not wearing a seatbelt in New South Wales.
Cr Coorey also addressed the challenge of policing this rule, revealing that it will be enforced by council rangers and with the support of national parks in the area.
