Google taken to court over allegedly misusing consumer location

Google has been taken to court over allegations it has been misleading consumers about the collection and use of their location data.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said Google misled consumers through its on-screen representations about the personal data collected.

They allege Google kept and used personal location data without the consumers’ knowledge.

ACCC chairman Rod Sims tells Ross Greenwood consumers need to be aware how their data is used.

“They say if you abuse your location history that the places you go with your device will stop being added to your location history map, when in fact you needed to pause something else as well that wasn’t really mentioned.

“If they’re tracking your location they can then aggregate that up and use that for their advertising business.”
