Sir John Monash was an extraordinary Australian.

One of the first ANZACs to come under fire at Gallipoli, by 1918 he was in charge of the entire Australian corp.

In the lead up to ANZAC Day, Sir Monash will be honoured on the battlefield of Villers-Bretonneux in France.

The Sir John Monash Centre will officially open next month and will present the story of our soldiers who sacrificed their lives on Western Front.

Chris Smith will be fortunate enough to witness the unveiling.

Sir John Monash’s great-grandson Michael Bennett tells Chris what he learned from his heroic ancestor.

“It’s important to me and my family for John Monash’s place in history to be well understood.

“He was raised often as an example of good behaviour… his charisma, his ability to describe situations so that anyone, a layman, could understand it.

“We should be proud of the heroes we have and learn from them.”
