Doctors forced to operate during time-off due to budget cuts

Surgeons at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead are working overtime and on the weekends to perform lifesaving surgery on sick children.

A senior pediatrician at the hospital emailed 2GB’s Ray Hadley saying administrators have known about the issues since April 2016.

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard says he’s told senior hospital staff to fix the problem.

“I know there’s been some issues.

“Whenever a child comes in from the bush we need to make sure they are given priority.  I’ve made that very clear to administration.”

Listener Andrew called in saying his four-year-old son’s surgery has been postponed for the sixth time.

“We’ve been set back until 2:30 and they’ll see if they’ve got a bed then. Otherwise the surgeon says he’ll come in on Saturday to do the surgery.”
