Jason Day has broken a 20-month winless streak on the PGA Tour to claim the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

The Australian and his opponent, Sweden’s Alex Noren, were forced to return to the course on Monday (local time) for a sixth playoff-hole after failing light halted play the night before.

Day produced an impeccable approach shot, while the Swede found the water, handing the Aussie his 11th PGA Tour victory.

It’s his second at Torrey Pines after winning the same tournament in 2015, also in a playoff.

Day’s told the PGA Tour he didn’t think it was possible after suffering another niggling back injury last week.

“It’s been a long time coming, I know that last year wasn’t the greatest season for me.

“My goal is always to try and get back to number one so this is a good start in the right direction.

“I was up all night last night just thinking about trying to get that next win… I had my best mate on the bag and it was a nice way to go.”

Marc Leishman was the next best of the Aussies, finishing in a tie for eighth.

Cameron Smith tied 20th, Australian Open winner Cameron Davis tied for 58th.

In his return to competitive golf, Tiger Woods made finish at three-under, tied for 23rd.
