One person is dead and more than 20 others have been injured after a car was driven through Times Square in New York.

The horrifying incident happened shortly before midday, local time.

A 26-year-old man is in custody after the rampage.

It’s believed he was under the influence of alcohol.

He initially tried to flee the scene, with reports he was “going after people” before being arrested.

The incident is not being treated as terror-related.
