‘How could I sleep at night?’: ICU doctor’s inspiring initiative to save the lives of the homeless
An inspiring ICU doctor has shared the driving force behind his admirable work making him a finalist for Young Australian of the Year.
Dr Daniel Nour is being acknowledged for identifying a gap in the healthcare of vulnerable people in NSW through his mobile medical clinic Street Side Medics.
He told Deborah Knight they provide primary healthcare for free, without the need for ID or Medicare.
“A lot of people experiencing homelessness may not necessarily want to see a doctor.
“We’d have a team of volunteers outside a food service to approach those lining up.
“Sometimes it takes weeks to build on people’s trust and get them to come into our service.
“How could I sleep at night knowing that there are 40/50-year-olds who are dying on the streets of Sydney of heart failure and that’s something we can treat.”
