Huge concerns about ‘holes’ in legislation to decriminalise cannabis
There are concerns the legalisation of cannabis in the ACT will place children and vulnerable groups at risk.
The ACT has become the first Australian jurisdiction to decriminalise the use, possession and cultivation of cannabis.
The legislation allows people over 18 to possess 50 grams of cannabis and grow two plants for personal use.
But it will still be illegal to buy marijuana or share a joint when the legislation comes into effect next year, leading to widespread confusion.
CEO of the Ted Noffs Foundation Matt Noffs tells Steve Price the law has seemingly been passed without any strategic thought.
“In campaigning to take control of drug laws and looking for safer, saner drug laws, I am concerned that we’re rushing this.
“I don’t feel that the entire framework around it is thinking about it from the point of view of the health and safety of our kids and our community.”
