‘I’m glad I survived’: 100-year-old WWII hero remembers his role in history

Bill Purdy

Bill Purdy, a 100-year-old World War II veteran, joined the RAAF in 1941 and was posted to England as a Pilot Officer, flying Lancasters with No. 463 Squadron RAAF, in Bomber Command.

Between April and August of 1944, he completed 37 missions, including participating in the famous bombing of Pointe du Hoc on D-Day.

“We didn’t know until the night before that this was going to be the big attack to start the end of the war,” Mr Purdy told Ray Hadley about D-Day.

After serving his time, Mr Purdy said his life was just a “mess of circumstances”, as he eventually became the Chairman of Arnott’s Biscuits.

“I’m glad I survived and had my children, and my children have their children to keep the Purdy name going,” he said.
