Alan Jones has extended a helping hand to a farmer struggling through the drought, in memory of his own father.

Marlene has been a farmer on her 10,000-acre property in the northern NSW town of Bingara for over 35 years.

But after selling 60 per cent of her herd and struggling to feed her cattle, she’s now being forced to leave her farm and find another job.

“This woman is a metaphor for a problem that government do not understand,” says Alan.

Marlene is now looking for a job for the first time in her life and is even willing to work in the mines or drive trucks.

This struck a chord with Alan, reminding him of his own father, who left their family farm during a drought to work in the mines in order to put food on the table.

“In the name of my old man, I’m going to fly Marlene to Sydney, put her up for a couple of nights in a hotel, give her a bit of a break, and in the meantime, we’ll see if we can get her a job.

“That’s my little bit in the name of my old man. What can you do out there, my listeners across Australia?”
