Independent MP Dai Le explains importance of Australian flag dress
Independent MP Dai Le received a standing ovation after her powerful maiden speech to parliament.
During her speech, she described fleeing Vietnam as a child and spending years in refugee camps before settling in Australia.
The Member for Fowler was wearing a traditional Vietnamese dress from fabric printed with the Australian flag.
She told Ben Fordham the dress was her way of showing her gratitude.
“As refugees, we’re very grateful for Australia … and I felt that I needed to make a statement about that.”
