The federal government will start building an Indigenous voice from the ground up to advise the government and parliament on Indigenous policy.

35 regional and local groups will be established and linked to a national body.

Indigenous leader Warren Mundine told Joe Hildebrand they should be working with established Aboriginal groups.

“We’ve got a whole wide range of groups across Australia, why aren’t they tapping into this.

“Why are we setting up bodies and then working our way up to the top … to me it’s like a huge bureaucracy.”

The Uluru Statement from the Heart called for an Indigenous voice enshrined in the constitution.

From the Heart Director Dean Parkin told Joe there needs to be a referendum.

“We need to make sure that the voice has real protection that only the constitution can provide.”
