Peter Rudland had no idea his life would change forever one June morning in 2010.

The SAS soldier was en route to a Taliban target in a Black Hawk helicopter when disaster struck.

The helicopter crashed, killing three Australians.

Peter could have been one of them and he puts his survival down to extraordinary luck.

“I pretty much broke every major bone in my body,” he tells Alan Jones.

“I’m fairly lucky, you know.

“The rifle, on impact, embedded into my leg… pretty much down to the bone. But where it went through, it was in the fold in the muscles so the damage wasn’t overly bad.”

Eight years on, Peter is competing in this year’s Invictus Games in cycling and wheelchair rugby.

The final for the wheelchair rugby is on tonight and Peter admits the competition will be tough.

“We’re all so proud of you,” Alan says. “Good luck!”
