Is hot air ballooning actually safe?

Article image for Is hot air ballooning actually safe?

Following a terrifying air balloon accident in Egypt last week which injured seven Australians, questions have been raised over air balloon safety.

Is the romantic experience worth the risk?

Peter Gibson from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority tells Michael McLaren the public shouldn’t be concerned.

“Our record is better than nations like England and the United States. We’ve only had a handful of accidents.

“Pilots hold a commercial pilot license and the balloons themselves are managed in the same way as a small charter airline.”

He says driving a car is more dangerous than taking a ride in an air balloon.

“In an air balloon or small aircraft, people get worried. The reality is they’re immensely safer than driving a car or a motorbike.”
