Wiradjuri woman Yvonne Weldone has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for her efforts in helping the Aboriginal community and is now a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Yvonne has been a member of the NSW Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council for more than 30 years.

Last year, she was the first Indigenous candidate for lord mayor in the 179-year history of the City of Sydney Council.

Ms Weldon won a seat at Town Hall and is likely to give the top job another shot.

Yvonne told Ben Fordham her ancestors deserve the recognition.

“This is about them, and I’m just set on the path they set for me.”
