Trainer David Payne is hopeful mare Montefilia will be triumphant in the Melbourne Cup today.

Last year he told her owners to wait until 2022 for a run in the Cup.

“It would be a dream for me I suppose and [jockey Jason Collett] to realise, we always dreamed of having a run in the Melbourne Cup never mind a big chance,” he told Ray Hadley.

“I think we are going in with a big chance, with a bit of luck.

“We didn’t have much luck in the Caulfield Cup, so we hope maybe it’s an omen for today.”

He told Ray about the moment he told the owners that she might be something special.
