‘It’s quite special’: Sole female Bathurst 1000 driver shares her experience
Simona de Silvestro was the only female driver to take part in last weekend’s Bathurst 1000.
The Swiss native jumped ship several years ago to continue her racing career in Australia and she’s regarded now regarded as one of the great female drivers around the world.
She tells John Stanely “it’s quite special”.
“In all my racing, I’ve always kind of been the only [female].”
De Silvestro, who imagined herself behind the wheel from age six, says she hopes to inspire other young drivers, females in particular, to follow their dreams.
“Racing may not be the first sport a girl goes into it, but that’s what I wanted to do, and here I am today.”
