There’s been a huge backlash to the state government’s plan to scrap mandatory licences for a raft of different trade industries.

Yesterday Ray Hadley slammed the Department of Fair Trading for the proposal which would see unlicensed and unqualified tradies flood 13 different industries, including painting, plastering and paving.

Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean says it’ll benefit competition and “empower consumers”.

NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley tells Ray “it’s nuts”.

“What’s the value of one’s qualifications? What’s the value of a licence anymore? It’s completely out of touch with the real world.

“If that’s to be thrown out the window, it’s Rafferty’s Rules and it’s obviously bad.”

Mr Foley says it’s a way for government to cut costs and is adamant “as sure as night follows day, the shonks will move in and they’ll undercut the qualified licenced tradesmen”.

During this morning’s question time, Deputy NSW Labor Leader Michael Daley tweeted “the House is in meltdown”.

Mr Foley says it’s in response to “265 Labor members being thrown out in question time over the last few years and not a single member of the government”.
