Tim Cahill has spoken ahead of his Socceroos swansong, saying “it’s the right time” to say goodbye.

The legendary Australian footballer will pull on the green and gold for the final time tonight, as the Socceroos take on Lebanon at ANZ Stadium.

He speaks with his old friend Alan Jones – the Godfather as he calls him – ahead of the match.

“It feels amazing. It’s the right time. It’s perfect,” says Cahill.

“It’s just a nice way for me to say thank you to Australia for the support and the journey of such a long career that I had to fight for.”

Cahill has represented his country 107 times over the past 15 years, scoring a record 50 goals.

He tells Alan it’s been a privilege every single time.

“I’ve always treated every game for the Socceroos like it’s my last.

“I’m so thankful that I can represent the country this one last time.”

Cahill will come off the bench and is expected to play the final 10 minutes.

He says it’s more about thanking the fans than the other way around.

“I seriously am so grateful and humble for tonight and more importantly, it’s just thanking the fans and acknowledging them, more than anything, for standing by me.”
