Labor candidate in the Bennelong by-election, Kristina Keneally, has been accused of handing out how-to-vote cards to dementia patients in a retirement home.

The Calvary Ryde Retirement Community has confirmed the former NSW Premier and her staff were at the retirement home on Monday, December 4.

Before leaving, one of Ms Keneally’s staff tried to hand out “photos” to patients before being stopped by staff.

“Anyone who chooses to visit Calvary facilities are welcome, however we do ask that the privacy and dignity of our residents is paramount and we shall take extra care to ensure this is enforced in future.”

Witnesses within the nursing home say the patients didn’t know who Keneally was.

Ms Keneally has responded saying it was an “incorrect characterisation of what happened” and that she “met some of the residents while they were playing bingo”.

Ms Keneally has now told television reporters the incident did not take place.
