Labor blocking John Barilaro’s appearance at inquiry into New York job
The NSW Labor Party is standing in the way of former John Barilaro appearing at an inquiry into his appointment as New York Trade Commissioner.
Mr Barilaro is demanding the opportunity to defend himself following several weeks of extraordinary allegations.
Nationals MP Wes Fang is now urging the other members of the inquiry committee to allow Mr Barilaro to give evidence under oath.
In emails obtained by 2GB, Mr Fang writes:
“Given Mr Barilaro has publicly expressed his wish to be cross-examined… I believe it is incumbent on the Committee to ensure this happens as soon as possible.
“I propose a hearing next Tuesday, July 26.”
However, the Opposition is so far pushing back on Mr Barilaro’s appearance.
They are instead inviting Mr Barilaro the opportunity to provide written evidence.
It comes as his former chief of staff Mark Connell claims Mr Barilaro told him in 2019:
“This is the job for when I get the f*** out of this place.
“I don’t want to go to London… f*** that… I’m off to New York”
Mr Barilaro categorically denies this.
