Under a Labor government, companies with over 1,000 employees would be forced to publically disclose how much they pay woman compared to men.

Companies already give details about their pay gap to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

But Labor’s plan would see that information become available to the public.

Companies that fail to comply with Labor’s disclosure requirement could be excluded from competing for government work.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is concerned workplace conflict would be sparked if pay details were disclosed.

Economist Judith Sloan tells Chris Kenny Labor’s idea isn’t new and has been adopted by other nations across the globe.

But she says the Opposition’s announcement is an example of playing politics rather than being about actioning meaningful change.

“This is all about politics. This is all about Labor saying, ‘We’re the party for women, the Liberals are hopeless’.

“It really is about politics driving policy and it’s pretty silly policy.”
