There are renewed calls for quotas in the Liberal Party, but some MP’s are searching for a different solution.

The number of female candidates running at the next election is on track to drop to its lowest level in almost 20 years.

While not all candidates are locked in, only 22 women are vying for a Lower House seat, compared to 65 men.

Acting Labor leader Tanya Plibersek says the result is embarrassing for the government.

To address the issue, Liberal MP Sussan Ley is urging the party to introduce quotas.

Other women within the party are calling for a different approach, claiming quotas are a “Labor solution” to a Liberal problem.

Liberal Senator Amanda Stoker tells Luke Grant “the whole thing’s a bit of a beat up”.

“I’m anti-quotas and I’ve been consistently that way for a long time.”
